Doctors warn Eyelash Extensions' Lovers Against New Infectious Disease

The appearance of new tiny organisms which cannot be seen by the normal human eyes makes doctors to alert eyelash extensions' fans about the potential hazards.

The microscopic organisms commonly called lash lice, which is also medically known as " Demodex mites" can live and thrive on the eyelash follicles if the area around the eyelash is left uncleaned.

Don't be confused with the head lice, which is a parasite."The lice can be transferred from one person to another, but are more likely to infest people who have lash extensions." Dr. David Simimi, an oculoplastic surgeon tells CBS Los Angeles (source).

Normally,  the eyelash extensions take 3 to 4 weeks before they are replaced. And medical care professionals explain that this allows dirt and dead skin cells to gather around the eyelash area, which provides a nice breeding home for the growth of lash lice.

As Doctor Malik explains, generally the idea when you have eyelash extensions is that people are afraid to kind of touch them because they don't want the eyelash extensions to fall out."

To make the area clean without removing the eyelash extensions, Doctors recommend using Tea tree oil

"We recommend Tea tree-based cleanser. Any cleanser that has a diluted form of Tea tree, and it is a good idea to use on a daily basis."  Dr. Malik explains.

She further recommends giving a break to your eyelids from using eyelash extensions.
